You could eliminate a fair number of nodes for sure but as long as what you're doing works for you then I wouldn't worry too much.
Try playing around seeing what you can do just bending the lines and using the adjustment leavers.
You may be surprised what you can do.
On the left of the image here are some examples of shapes and bends you can get away with using just 2 nodes, one at the start and one at the end.
