But atmospheric blurring and a bluish cast are real effects near the horizon. Your line of sight traverses a greater distance of air and get scattered. At least part of the fuzziness was deliberate.
If you look at photos Apollo astronauts took on the Moon, it's very hard to tell if that's a nearby hummock or a distant mountain. Without air, an important clue is lost.
