>>2189062It's the same thing as the previously-mentioned PATH tool in gimp. Paths are stored in a separate space from the pixel layers. I'm not qualified to give any kind of tutorial on best methods but I will demo vectoring with a "difficult background." This is not about making a true vector image, which uses a different procedure and software.
>topWe create a path around the outline of the figure we want. Paths consist of nodes at floating coordinates, which have 0-2 outgoing velocities to make the mathematical paths between them. I show you the paths in the project on the lower right, just pointing out here how they are distinct from the bitmap layers. Save it as a project, instead of exporting as an image, to preserve them. The lines in this example are bad but pretend they are good and there are about half the number of nodes pls.
>second downThe path is used to make smooth selections, stroke lines that can, themselves, become smooth selections, color to alpha areas, and other things. After just masking the image with "Selection from Path," I added a nice obnoxious bg underneath to reveal what needs to be done about bleed-in or fucked up lines.
>third downThis is an example tweak I didn't use, but. A copy of the render was set on a dark gold bg, then gamma turned down, then blurred, then masked with the path as before. Stroked an additional white line on the mask to expand this dark layer's visibility beneath the main figure, and it kind of reinforces the outline with appropriate coloration. More or different outlining can be useful in some situations.
