Strokes have their uses and can look nice when used properly, but in the hands of noobs or idiots they don't look nice at all. Variable width lines are the same. The argument about variable width lines = effort has been put in is also total bullshit in my not so humble opinion. I also have to argue that in the pic that 1362166 posted, anyone who knows how to use strokes properly certainly wouldn't use them the way they're used.... but anyway, to answer your question: for thinner lineart what i do depends.on various factors. Variable width doesn't always work and will look bad if the lines are too thin, they get wobbly like you said. I think that if you get down past the equivalent of about 1pt stroke then you're better off using strokes if you want your lines to look straight. Thickening the lines is also an option and some people prefer that although personally I prefer to have the lines as close to the thickness of the source pic as possible.
Incidentally, stroke haters will hate this one.
