* Make a line, like I did in Red.
* Select the two lines listed.
* Click on Path->Division (CTRL and the "/" key)
* Selct piece in middle you want deleted.
* Hit Delete.
Hope this helps. I like doing it this way, because you dont' get the intercies of two fills to clean up, as well.
Note: the division line sometimes needs you to add more to it, thus why it's not just a simple "u" shape for the line for splicing. Inkscape is odd that way...
