I recommend looking up photoshop basics like layers, masking, and filters as well as getting a general idea of what all the tools do.

What do you mean by background making? You can find free patterns online to make backgrounds if that's what you mean.

One tip, don't use magic wand. If you do, at least smooth the edges, right clicking with the magic wand and selecting refine edge.

magic wand tool mostly
a little free hand here and there at the edges or white spots
i don't remember but i think i also blurred the mask on this one too to get rid of some pixel edges, can't recall correctly
i pen (lasso, actually) only when its a dead case for the wand tool, kinda time consuming (but great results)
