Strokes are lines that have not line variance in them, a "shape based vector is done by tracing both sides of a line so you get variation in it.
Strokes are fine if done properly and they can save you a lot of time, but if all you do is trace the center of the line don't adjust the points so they are not blunt and keep everything the same thickness it looks very lazy and bad.
