I started the rose off using gradient meshes, but it became too cumbersome and I finished it using blurs, so you can see some meshes on the rose. All the other little petals were done with meshes. As for the patterns on the kimono, all the top level details were just different opacity whites, and the lower level details were different opacity blacks with different transparency modes (mostly darken, soft light, and overlay).
