Hello, newfag here. I read the guide but still can't figure out what I would have to do to make backgrounds like in this transparent:

increased selection size by 1px,
feathered by 5px (guess that's too much),
then transformed the white colour of the selection to transparency.
The problem is: The background isn't pure white, so there's this annoying tint left.
I then made another attempt, but reduced the selection by 1px, instead of increasing it, and then removed the background, then tried the first method again, but then there was a way too visible outline around the character, and I guess I removed some detail.
Would I have to enlarge the image to reduce the outlines by creating a more precise selection and then shrink it again or are there some other fast methods? Should I learn how to use the path (pen?) tool instead?
