>How do you determine how many points a strand of hair needs, and how do you determine where to place the adjustment bars?Generally, the rule of thumb is to minimize the amount of nodes needed to the bare minimum. If you're dealing with a complicated line and you aren't sure where to place nodes, only place them at the tips and endpoints. Then, adjust the handles at the ends to match the curvature close to those endpoints (as highlighted in the 2nd video). Do not over extend the handles, because you run the risk of flattening the line and losing curvature. Only push them as far as you can to maintain the curvature nearby the node. Once you have maximized the use of the handles, look for a bend or portion of the hair where nodes are needed to help shape the middle portion and place a pair and adjust the nodes and handles as needed.
Hands are a beast of their own, but if you logically plan out placing nodes at the bends of the fingers and palm, you can make something that looks very intimidating much simpler and feel satisfied doing it. The hands are a little too simple in your picture, so I posted a more complex hand to give you an idea how to plan out the nodes.
