It adds a little bit more to the image so its not as boring to look at but its subtle enough to not become a focal point (unlike some silhouette cutouts). It can add a slight sense of depth to an image if the "waifu" has proper shading done. Most anime renders involve some shading which on screen indicates depth, placing them over a solid color removes that dimension. Adding the shadow just make it look right.
