I am not as up to date as some of the people here on /w/ but darker than black is a great one, I don't know what people think about cromeshelled regios but I enjoyed it you might as well as it feels similar to bleach. Samurai Champloo is another good one as well that has is a great blend of comedy and action.
As for older ones, I suggest all people who are getting into Anime watch Outlaw Star, and the original Mobile Suit Gundam. If you don't like the old style animation I would suggest Gundam Seed as it follows the originals plot fairly close. The last great classic in my eyes would be Trigun like Outlaw Star very few people tend not to like it. If you find yourself liking Mechas I would also suggest Robotech and Macross they are similar but each has its own plot line. one last classic would be Rurouni Kenshin. Everything else people are posting are all pretty good shows at least worth a check.
