Feather makes your selection smoother (I used 1px feather). This works well if you want a quick and mostly clean selection in case you have a lot of space to work with like with the white space around Madoka.
I'm not sure what program you use though, this is how I do it in Photoshop. It is also possible that I'm just over thinking this and the jagged line is not really a big deal.
