Next, stroke the path to re-add what you cut off. This will produce smooth, consistent outlines.
They will blend smoothly into transparency, allowing the image to be placed on any background.
If you need to use a different colored stroke for different parts of the image, I have found it easy to use one giant path for the image outline, then use a selection tool (usually the lasso) to stroke portions of the path.
