Using fills allows you to give some life to your lines. Thin out certain areas to make them more subtle. Make others thicker to emphasize the most prominent part.
The best example i can come up with off the top of my head is this vector of Zero Two by Phuxxor:

Lower you node count and smooth out all the lines. Not sure what you mean about license to smooth curves...
