To remove the button you have to edit the index.html, and delete the line i have highlighted in the image. This is also how you change what glyph appears in the button, and the title of your start page.
The box in the background you have highlighted is labeled as #panel, instead of color values or margins just replace them with none; like i have in the picture. Thats all you should need to do.
