>>1962618>>1962622because PS doesn't (afaik, feel free to correct me) have an equivalent to GIMP's color-to-alpha feature, which is extremely useful for masking. if you want to mask something that is black-bordered shapes on a white background, in GIMP you can just select the background, grow the selection to cover the antialiased region, and use color-to-alpha and the white will be gone without modifying the black areas shape at all. whereas what the pastebin describes (just cutting the region outside) will also cut off pixels from the border.
the hard work of making a good mask is the same in both programs (and that's what takes the majority of the time) but if you have a good mask, color-to-alpha can give much better results in many cases because it preserves edge detail.
