The look of Linux desktops can be very appealing to beginners, because changing and configuring the aspect of your system is immensely easier on Linux than on Windows and the results can be very good, depending on the user's skills and knowledge. However, as a humanities teacher who's been using Linux both on his personal machines and on the machines at his school for 5 years, I can tell you that what makes Linux better is what lies under the hood. At the end of the day, you can try to make Windows look as good as Linux, but the problem is that you're still using the same old limited software that was designed with the mind to control the user and not the other way round. The longer I used Linux, the less I regretted leaving Windows. Some tools such as Dolphin for KDE are way too good for me to come back to Windows now: I literally only use Windows to play games, for everything else Linux simply works much better, especially on mid/low-end machines.
