Now, for iPhones 4/3GS, and iPod Touch 4th gen, you can use redsn0w, which is still tethered. Which means everytime you restart, you must reboot with redsn0w to use any of your tweaks again. Otherwise they just crash.
Now as far as future jailbreaking, I have seen posts with screen caps of iOS 7 with the activator tweak icon on the springboard, which says that it is jailbreakable and they have found many many exploits to keep jailbreaking around for a long time. Thats why I'm hanging on to my iPhone 5. That, and I'm a beta tester.
