Its not that most of the Naruto fanbase is retarded. Its the majority people who enjoy mange/anime are retarded. I'll take that a step further. Every subculture has a majority of annoying people that annoy those who really "get it".
In this subculture, the "true" fans don't want to be associated with Naruto, Bleach, etc.
In the gaming subculture, the "true" players don't want to be associated with Call of Duty, Halo, etc.
In the metal subculture, the "true" listeners don't want to be associated with core bands, screamo bands, etc
Anyone who has wet their feet in a few subcultures should pick up on this sort of thing. Humans can just be annoying, and people don't like being associated with those they find annoying.
All that aside, I really enjoy Naruto. Its only really popular anime/manga that I like aside from FMA. Its incredibly cheesy at times with some really ridiculous fans, but its a good story with a great OST. Takanashi Yasuharu is a boss.
