Tomoko has always been foreshadowed as liking girls since the beginning of the series, with her sexually harassing yuu and looking up skirts, and the story gradually turning out like this has felt pretty natural.
no idea why so many people hate where the story ended up going, when most of them stopped paying attention to the manga after the anime ended. people like to larp as fans for some reason i guess.

in fact, theres an entire spinoff manga with tomoko, yuu, and komi in middle school
