I selected the object, turned it into a mask, smoothed the outline, and then feathered it inside 1 pixel. That meant only the pixels within the boundary (or partially within) could be effected by the tools. I erased them.
Close up, it looks smooth to me against a contrasting background. If you disagree, point out _specific_ problems.
