Then you'll want to get either Apex or Nova (Apex #1) and Zooper or UCCW. UCCW is kinda better but Zooper is easier to work with and has a better interface. I personally use Zoo since I can't even figure out how to start up uccw.
Now, you really wanna just spend some time clicking every option in the launcher you downloaded and seeing what it does, a few things you should do right of the bat is get rid of the notification bar and set your grid to nothing less than 8x8, so you'll have more space to play with.
Now get yourself a vector of your waifu or mistress, most of the time the deviantart /w/ vector group will have what you need.

Don't worry about things not fitting, with zoop or uccw you can move widgets by a single pixel, so thats never a problem.
for the lockscreen, I'd recommend Widgetlocker, if it's buggy or crashing for you, then try golocker.
Try to keep it minimal, most people also put a single transparant icon for the camera.
