She's the only pilot with what appears to be personal agency, and it comes off as insanity because the situation, not her, is completely fucking insane. It's like, what other kind of person BUT Mari would you expect to find piloting one of those things? She's the soul of the eva, uninhibited and truthful. That's what I see anyway.
