Were they being pretentious?The paintings suited the tone of the show (and the theme song, for that matter) very well. Featureless men embracing a Diclonius girl: lovely but vaguely creepy, somber but weird, thought provoking but not obviously symbolic of anything. Considering that much of the show is about Diclonius girls turning into psychotic killing machines due to an unfulfilled desire to be loved, I'm pretty sure I could find a metaphor in there somewhere.
