In the earlier days, the people who were online were of higher quality; they had to really want to be on the internet to be there; it was not ubiquitous. Today, they're here in the same or even higher numbers, but they're diluted by... people like my parents who are online now. Another big thing thats somewhat related is that a lot of services are tying my online presence to my IRL presence (facebook, most google tools with the advent of Google+, etc.) People are less inclined to do fun things like argue in ignorance or just speak blatant contradictions when its explicitly tied to their real lives. More importantly, they can't speak out on touchy issues as much.
