1. use icons, they're far less obtrusive and more functional than big rectangles (right click desktop->personalise->change desktop icons)
2. lose your desktop shortcuts, if you need to access that folder or your bin alot, you can pin them to your taskbar, so when you write click the icon for explorer, they pop up in a list (right click taskbar->properties)
3. delete everything you don't use out of your system tray (triangle->customise)
4. install a visual style (google how to)
5. install an icon pack (again, google)
6. change or delete your start orb (google)
your rainmeter (or similiar) actually looks quite good, but put it all in line at the top maybe
