Even with basic guidance, not everyone can afford the time to blaze new trails alone. You may argue that there's no room in this hobby for people who can't spare that kind of time, but that's a pretty elitist view.
I love people who are interested in learning, and I literally avoid people who don't try to push themselves, but I don't see the issue with waiting for a decent intro for Windows 8.
Besides which, I didn't think downgrading in order to use tools for the previous Windows version was an appropriate reason; though, there are many appropriate reasons for avoiding Windows 8.
If you're particularly keen on pushing the user to blaze new trails alone, provide some reference material. I doubt "how do I change my desktop" would get anyone very far. "Ricing" seems to be specific to 4chan (as far as I know). These kinds of hobbies require some pretty specific terminology and a total novice probably isn't going to find anything with a search engine.
