For me its the fact they love you but are not over baring about it. Its like they want you to know they love you but telling you that makes them feel weak and they want to be seen as someone who is strong. It can depending on the character get annoying as hell though.

A lot of it imo is the idea of closeness via physical contact. Even if it's hitting you or something, it proves they're more comfortable with you than someone who wouldn't touch you at all.
