Araragi's a philandering selfish bastard whose lack of emotional maturity and selective justice have nearly been his own end and the end of the world several times over - and this is something he acknowledges. He thinks of himself as a villain, he knows that he never solves anything on his own (someone else inevitably does all the work) and all the resolutions he pushes for never resolve anything, they're just the outcome that Raggers himself found most agreeable. He forces others to go along with his viewpoints and forces his idealism on others with his violent pacifism. The whole point of Second Season was how he'd made a mess of things running around acting selfishly and without Oshino to clean up after him things got worse and worse.
He's a great character but he's a terrible person - and that's how it's meant to be. When you break down how these "nice" harem protags act they're really not nice at all.
