They can collect data at a much higher resolution than they could before this, and it proves that they're on to something with the whole "let's network a bunch of telescopes together" idea. We're almost certain of the appearance of black holes, and they're tricky to spot, which gave us a good way to tell that this new technique was working. As a bonus, it produced a picture that gets all the popsci people excited so they dump more money into it.
