The average newfag, or indeed anyone who entered the culture after a given item was popular, won't care enough to learn the cultures traditions and past figures which aren't immediately relevant to participating in the culture right now, and even many oldfags won't remember or care about the stuff unless someone brings it up, appreciating the nostalgia it brings to look back but not actively taking a part in trying to keep the tradition alive.
