Although the the past 20 or so years it's symbolism has shifted to become more along the lines of Satanic. If you go back further, an inverted cross used to be a Christian symbol. The story goes that Saint Peter requested to be crucified upside down because he did not see himself as worthy of to be crucified the same way as Jesus was crucified.
