Your icons/shortcuts, although organized, do obscure the picture and lead to a disorganized appearance at a distance. Consider sorting them into appropriate directories and libraries to free up desktop space. All the programs you use frequently can be pinned to the start menu or taskbar for easy access.
I'd recommend hiding the taskbar. That's just me.
Rainmeter is easy smoke and mirrors to spruce the place up. If you don't want to fully rice out your computer, rainmeter will still make it look sharp. I put on the least original arrangement of enigma (a rainmeter theme) and arcs (a rainmeter clock) you've ever seen, and any company I had over was stunned. They asked what OS I was using.
Pic is my desktop from about a week ago. A clear desktop with a little tasteless rainmeter goes a fair way.
