I definitely feel you on the ill-equipped journey front. Don't know that it'll help but in the year or two before corona I saved up and gave travel a try, it's actually pretty freeing.
You meet lots of people, most with no ties to where you are right now, and not expecting to make any before moving on, like locking eyes with people on the road passing you in a car.
Also you're not bogged down by the daily worries of your life so you just free up a lot of energy for the duration of the trip, forces you to live in the moment and deal with things as they come, might be worth considering if you haven't already.
