Obelisks were carved from solid pieces of stone and then hauled to the sites where they were erected (sometimes hundreds of miles away), hence why that picture's file name is "unfinished obelisk Aswan". If anything, it's not cringe worthy, it's quite impressive, even by modern engineering standard.
