As a man who became a Christian later in life this picture holds almost a grandiose potpourri of meaning. I've always examined and experienced nature by appreciating the magnitude and absurdity of it's reality and all it implies. I look at the world and I see design. Beautiful, chaotic, and impossible design. It's always been rational and logical to me that there is a creator. In my search for meaning it turned out that Christ and the Bible of all things spoke resonating truth to my heart. Regardless of all presumption and history of the church, modern Christianity, and the mess it seems to be in. I look at this picture and I see the obvious common metaphor but also the intense reality of what faith in this world means. Yes those sheep are stupid and need their Shepard to lead them. The Shepard cares for his flock unconditionally. However I look at this and think about how the outside world sees this picture. It's a weak, brittle boy leading a flock of worthless, senseless creatures. Nobody believes the boy has any weight in this world, true strength or power aside from the sheep. As this boy is looked down upon by the world so is Christ. Yet the Majesty of Christ has already won. Humanity is arrogant, blind and hardened by narrowed perspectives. The reality is the opposite of what it appears. Anything not eternal is eternally out of date. This picture stirs hope in my heart.
