The world that Berserk takes place in is highly competitive, dog-eat-dog, brutal, and withoutba set of moral norms. Given that, it is the responsibility of everyone in that environment to get as far as they can so that they can't be taken advantage (something especially important someone like Griffith who has experienced a deep amount of trauma).
Idk it's been a while since I watched/read Berserk, so maybe I'm forgetting something, but that's what I remember thinking.
