this one is a reference to the book 'the invention of hugo cabaret' i made it for a subtle references thread a few months ago.
when i read the book (great read btw though now intellectually challenging) i read it with my gf at the time and it was the first novel she had read beginning to end (red flag, i know now) and we chose it because it had a lot of illustrations.
the illustrations were actually quite amazing and it made the book seem a lot shorter that it originally appeared.
a few years i saw the film and the opening scene is perfectly done and matches the book almost exactly.
that was the point in my life that i truly understood the significance of cinematography.
