Either you make one decomposition layer, and have too little grain, or make more and have to edit 5 layers simultaneously. From what I've tried, it's very useful for isolating a specific type of grain, while not disturbing other textures. Here, however, our goal is to completely remove features from the image, and being able to control the amount of grain on one layer greatly reduces the amount of work needed.
Pic related shows another issue with this technique: because there are so many layers to deal with (if you want proper grain control) it becomes quite convoluted as to which layer needs work (not to mention having to edit multiple layers simultaneously that effect each other).
Thanks for finding this though! Will probably use it for something, but not for this particular type of work.
