Hitler never wanted to be worshipped as some sort of God, he was a very humble person, his speeches do not exactly show what kind of person he is, but it just so happened that what he did for his people just got them to love him as much as they did, although other demagogues of his might have been trying to do that.
You say that he ruled through fear, yet you'd think that things like gun laws would be much more strict that would make it much harder for people to own weapons and this be able to resist, when, in fact, the complete opposite was done.
I cannot say much about him as a military leader, but, according to his bodyguard, Karl Wilhelm Krause, many times when the commanders that did not listen to him and did their own thing, battles were lost.
