However, sometimes chemical imbalances do happen, and it makes continuing on extremely hard. The stuff you once loved suddenly loses its shine, and you become apathetic slowly but surely. Trying to find new things to do to change it up sometimes doesn't work, and you find yourself going down that spiral that you feel you'll never get out of. I've been living with depression since I was quite young, and the only thing that's changed is that I learned how to handle it.
But you will make it. Sometimes you need to fight against yourself to do it, but making small steps towards bettering yourself will end with you actually getting better over time. Talk to people you may have lost touch with, find friends in your area through common interest groups; hiking is a good two-fer because it gets you outside and moving and meeting people. But most importantly, treat yourself kindly. You won't get better all at once, and you'll probably have a few relapses as you try. But don't give up on yourself, OP. You will come out stronger at the end of it, after living through trying to find your own purpose. You can do it.
