The guy is this genius-tier mathematician who wrote a single sci fi book in the 1970s, and maybe one more 20 or 30 years later. But, what a book. A rollicking adventure with characters you'll remember for a lifetime, some really mind-bending, meticulous sci fi stuff based upon some of our best understanding of some science mysteries of the time. Almost all of it still holds up today.
The cover still gives me chills whenever I see it. The character is standing on a clear floor at the bottom of the the shell of this monstrously huge, hollow planet. He's looking down at where a small black has been placed. Sorry for the small spoiler, but it's a rare book to find anymore. My copy fell apart and was lost years ago. I was trying to scan it when my scanner broke, and then my life fell apart for a decade.
The art is by Ralph McQuarrie, just a couple years before he became THE Star Wars artist, composing & painting some of the most iconic Star Wars art that you've seen every day of your life for decades now.
