It depends on the region, but a lot of people celebrate Tanabata the 07/07 every year, and some others, actually DO celebrate it on the seventh day of the seventh month on the lunisolar calendar, whichi this year is going to be the 20th August :D!
Normally people right down on paper wishes they have, sometimes as poems, and tie them up to the bambu trees.
