The tipping point in deciding to change my taskbar was when I downloaded and started fucking with this program:
http://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweakerIt gives you the option (among many other useful ones) to remove the minimum size restriction on your taskbar. It only makes a difference in vertical mode sadly but works wonders.
Aside from that it has an easy way to hide the start button while still allowing you to click the area and open the start menu. I was also able to customize the width of the little area on the taskbar used to show the desktop. I set it to 1px and it works great. There are some good tweaks for what to do when you hover over open programs and how to group them as well (pic related).
The one thing I didn't like about it is that it's a separate program that's always running in the background. You can easily disable the tray icon though and it's only using a cool 1860kb of ram right now so definitely worth it.
