>>7812396Just got back from /gif/, so enjoy my post-nut clarity. People who yearn for existence beyond their mortal lifespan typically find comfort in the various forms of afterlife offered by the various religions of the world. As an historian, I have an awareness of how tiny my own life is in the grand scheme of things, yet this does not turn me into a nihilist. Rather than wishing to be remembered forever (an impossibility), I merely wish to leave a mark that carries out beyond my life for however long it can in the long duree. This could be tangibly done in a book with my name on it, or in more abstract way in treating others with kindness in the hopes it will encourage others to do the same.
Don't live for forever, for it is a goal as lonely as it is impossible. Live for people and future generations who can carry some part of you forwards beyond your grave.
