I would suggest Cat's Cradle as one of his definitive works, especially considering an apocalypse by most unusual method, with brief post-apocalypse glimpses once it takes place. Not wanting to ruin the story, I'll say this: when reading it (from a writer's perspective), very critically evaluate the hard science of the plot & events. Vonnegut did a great job, but he missed a couple of essential science details ... I think maybe deliberately so he could continue the story for a couple of chapters after the world ends. He came up with such a creative world-ending event that I think ... from a pure science point of view ... there would have been no real survivors afterward to have anything to write about.
