you know, this kind of struck a chord that makes me believe i know what it is you are going on about. For me, a wallpaper itself is like a story, and the visual stimulus sort of starts ticking off my imagination, and I FEEL the wallpaper, like it is alive, and it's like i create a complete emotional situation for that one instantaneous instant in the time of that wallpaper. As if... as if I don't know, theres three ways i get that, the first is through writing, which i find to be a slower way to get the mental pleasure, but enormously satisfying. The second is through wallpapers, which I find instantaneous, but rarely fulfilling, it just makes me hungry for more (though in defence of wallpapers, there are many that have made me just stop and stare at the screen, completely lost for words and absorbing all the feels). The third is through moments in life when i see something that i find exceptionally beautiful, for example, one time when i was lying on the road looking up at the stars with a rather cute girl.
I think the mental pleasure you are talking about is like feels, but not feels, its like godlike feels. Or this could be me fitting my own experiences in with yours XD either way, even though I don't GET you if you get me, I get you, and I think a lot of people addicted to wallpapers will understand this to a degree
and end note: anime also kinda does this for me, but i think its simply because its moving art that is not childish. I hate dragonballz (please dont hate me) because i feel like its shallow compared to a lot of other stuff. Watch 5 centimetres a second, you'll get what I'm talking about.
And in the meantime, I will post some of my favourite feely feel walls
