Not every satanist you see agrees with LaVey. Thus not every artist chooses to use symbols proposed by Mr. LaVey. It's not about what correct or not. It's art, a form of human expression, not algebra. Satanism promotes individualism. If I desire a symbol used by a devoted believer and wish to claim it, bending it to suit my purposes... Now that's quite anti-christian, and certainly not the only time in the human history when a symbol has been claimed and altered to serve a new purpose.
As for dictating symbols as fashion statements for kids, I agree with you about that. I don't see paganism having anything to with that though, it's simply contemporary desires of making money and profit.
