A large collection of colonies and client states to provide resources/goods without dealing with other countries means you can set up socialism in the metropole while also slowly increasing the quality of life in the provinces.
Of course I'm the wrong kind of socialist for this thread. The way people who are here for reasons other than aesthetics want to do it probably wouldn't work.
